Action/ Inaction/ Helplines/ Prayers
So, we are back to the dog things again. A little update on this guest post by Avik Noronha called “Where is the Love?”. Those of you who are hard pressed for time and will find it difficult to go back and read that post, here is a synopsis.
Last Sunday, Avik and his brother went out on business to one of Calcutta’s busiest and grandest shopping district. While they were passing by, Avik noticed something unusual. In a place where people would give anything for parking space, all the motorists were driving by an empty one. They took a peek to find out why. There was a dog lying in the parking space in a pool of blood. She was alive and in a lot of pain. Someone, who had parked his car over there had not bothered to wait and let the dog get up from where it was sleeping—under the car. He had simply driven over her.
There she was, lying helpless, and not one person stopped to help. Even the shopkeepers, who must have seen the dog grow up in front of them, were non-chalant. Some sick person was even clicking photographs with his camera phone.
Avik and his brother, Rohan, decided to act. They called up as many people as they could (including me) and requested us to get help. Someone got through to the “People for animals” (PFA). Luckily, they had an ambulance in the vicinity, and within a short time, the dog had been picked up, and the blood washed away from the street. Life was back to normal in New Market.
Unfortunately, the dog did not survive. She had lost too much blood, and the driver had broken her spine while driving over her. No one knows how long she had been lying there helpless. Maybe she could have lived if someone acted sooner.
I had a chat with Avik a couple of days back. He is taking it a little hard on himself, and I can completely understand why. We were both wondering why no one came forward to help the dog that day. Perhaps, the chilling answer to that question is that people have simply stopped caring for anyone other than those near and dear to him… but for now, we would both like to believe that it probably happened because people simply didn’t know where to call for help.
Avik had requested me to provide some useful contacts in this blog, should one of our readers face a similar situation some day. I hear you, Avik. The Kolkata Animals Helpline will be available for all members of this blog from today onwards. Let’s hope they act, now that they know what to do.
