A very wet and scared Aru

I had once seen a program on Animal Planet where a pregnant possum was wheeled into the hospital with severe burns. Someone thought it would be funny to douse the animal in Gasoline and set it on fire.

The possum didn’t make it, but somehow the vets managed to save its premature babies. Everyone who saw the program was horrified, but we all dismissed it thinking that it was a one-off incident sparked off by some very sick individual/s. Thankfully, we do have to contend with too many of these sick people around us.

I really believed that, until something similar happened to me. A few days back, I was alerted by frantic barks in our driveway, that sounded like the dogs were scared. I rushed outside to see the younger dogs cowering at a corner and barking as if their life depended on it.

Running around like crazy was the dog that you guys see on my Entrecard widget—Aru. He ran and ran and ran, and sometimes threw himself down on the ground as if he was trying to wipe something off himself. It took me a while to recognize who it was, because Aru looked nothing like he usually does.

He was dripping wet, the hairs on his back were standing, his eyes were blood red, and he was very clearly terrified. He wouldn’t stop running when we tried to stop him. It took three of us to pin him down and wipe him dry. Then we carried him indoors and made him lie down on his bed.

He was shivering, and he shivered for two straight days. It took another three days for him to venture outside by himself. Whenever he had to relieve himself, one of us just had to accompany him.

So what do you think happened that afternoon?

I had written in one of my posts before that there is a lake right behind my house. Someone thought it might be funny to push the dog into the lake. Aru had never been in the water before… naturally, he was traumatized. Thankfully, INDogs are natural swimmers and he could make it ashore. Even then, it must have been shattering for him to have someone push him into the lake. Does a happy, trusting dog deserve this? No!

What kind of people do this to helpless animals?
